Connectforce Companions FAQs

How do the calls work?

We will help you set up a video call on Zoom - we’ll walk you through a step by step to make it super simple! Each week, Volunteer and Older Companion will meet on Zoom at an agreed allotted time and chat for 20 minutes.

What will we talk about?

Before the programme begins, we’ll send both parties some information about their Companion, to give them some conversation starters. We’ll also provide a ‘Topic of the week’ with a theme for each week's conversation, which can act as a springboard for interesting chats. Otherwise, it's totally free time to discuss anything you wish - just like you would when meeting any new friend.

What safeguarding measures are in place?

All of our Volunteer Companions take part in our official Connectforce Companion training before their first chat, which includes a dedicated safeguarding module. We also provide a full DBS check for every Volunteer. We continually monitor the progress of the conversations through feedback and reporting, our Programme Manager is on hand to deal with any issues or concerns.

Is there anyone who can't take part?

Connectforce Companions may not be as helpful for people living with dementia, memory loss, or mental health issues who need a higher level of support. But we are working with specialists to create a suitable, inclusive programme. So we would love to hear from you if you feel this could be of interest for you. Get in touch at .

What if we don't get along?

We pair our Companions based on shared interests, so we would encourage a couple chats whilst you both relax and get to know each other. However, if you are really finding it tricky, then you can let us know and we will organise the rest.
